Sommervold Hall at the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He died on October 17, 2012, at the age of 90. The service included music, slides shows, and many tributes to the former senator who was a decorated World War II bomber pilot, the 1972 Democratic Party nominee for president, and creator of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs. Senator McGovern, the 1972 Democratic presidential candidate, also helped establish the modern day food stamp program, led the opposition in Congress to the Vietnam War, and brought many well-known figures into politics for the first time, including President Bill Clinton. Speakers included Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD). Recordings of former Ambassador McGovern were played.
