To avoid charges of extortion, tax fraud, bribery, and conspiracy, he resigned the vice presidency October 10, 1973, and pleaded no contest to a criminal charge of tax evasion for accepting bribes during his tenure as governor of Maryland. Following prepared remarks, Mr. Beall responded to questions from members of the audience.
