      <description>As part of a week-long national training conference on animals in disasters, panel members talked about pet and service animal evacuation and transportation during disaster relief efforts. Topics included Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, equipment and vehicles, the role of the Humane Society, the danger of avian flu, and zoo animals. The formation of a National Animal Disaster Advisory Committee was announced. The panelists responded to audience members' questions.</description>

      <title>Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina</title>
      <description>As part of the NEMA mid-year conference Mr. Latham and Mr. Carwile talked about the Hurricane Katrina disaster in Louisiana and Mississippi. They showed slides of pre-landfall preparations and of the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina and accompanying storm surge. They also talked about the command structure of disaster relief operations, jurisdiction and political issues, response resources, and public safety and security. They ended with summaries of statistics and lessons learned.</description>

      <title>Emergency Preparedness and First Responders</title>
      <description>In the keynote address, Director Baughman talked about national efforts in preparedness, the federal government's First Responder Initiative, and the proposed Homeland Security Department. Among the issues he addressed were coordination between local, state and federal agencies, training in preparation for natural disasters or terrorist attacks, and operations of the Federal Emergency Management Agency following September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.
    
 This was one of seven meetings in the CSIS Critical Infrastructure Protection Series. The program was joined during Mr. Hamre's opening remarks.</description>
