Thomas Confirmation Hearing Reaction

Two representatives of the NAACP commented on the confirmation hearings of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court following the day's session of the hearings. Ms. Jones said that while the NAACP expected Judge Thomas to defend his record in the hearings, the NAACP had not expected Judge Thomas to either express forgetfulness or deny his previous statements concerning civil rights. Ms. Jones said she had not expected Judge Thomas to metaphorically state, "apples are oranges or . . . pink is green."

Opposition to Judge Thomas Nomination

The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, a separate organization from the NAACP, held a news conference to announce its opposition to the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court seat vacated by the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The civil rights group said the nomination of the black judge would threaten civil rights already "under siege." The organization had researched the public record of Judge Thomas as a judge in the D.C. Court of Appeals and during his tenure as the head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Voter Registration Procedures

The committee heard testimony on S.250, the National Voter Registration Act of 1991. The second in a series of hearings on voter registration, witnesses included representatives of civil rights groups, election officials, and a voter registration organization. S.250, the "motor-voter" bill, would make voter registration possible through automobile license branches in connection with driver's license registration. With voter registration indicated on the driver's license, voters would not have to go through separate elaborate registration methods in order to vote. Opponents of the bill claimed the new voter registration procedures would be extremely costly to state and local governments, would increase the likelihood of fraud in voter registration, and would represent overreaching federalism encroaching upon the rights of local governments. Representatives of "Rock the Vote" described efforts to increase registration through music and advertising directed to youth.

Opinion Survey: Racial Attitudes in the U.S

The survey conducted by Harris explores Americans' attitudes towards race. Specifically, the survey sought to accomplish three things: (1) to track the attitudes about race relations over time, (2) to learn more about the American underclass, and (3) to contribute to the debate over civil rights. The survey finds that while many blacks feel racism still exists, many whites do not. However, both favor policies to improve the conditions of the underclass. Also discussed, in considerable detail, is the actual conducting of the the poll.
