Lincoln Prize Winners

The day after the prize presentation, some of the winners of the Lincoln Prize participated in a panel discussion on the Civil War. Participants included Professor Weigley who won first place for his book [A Great Civil War: A Military and Political History], published by Indiana University Press. The book examines wartime strategy and tactics as well as the broader operational modes used in Civil War theaters. Also present were two of the first place winners of the e-Lincoln Prize, Professors Ayers and Rubin, who along with their colleague, Professor William Thomas (not present), created the CD-ROM, book and web site [Valley of the Shadow: The Eve of War], published electronically by W.W. Norton and Company and the University of Virginia. This winning web can be found at http://valley.vcdh.virginia.edu. The web site allows visitors to explore in great detail the microcosms of antebellum life in two contrasting communities, one Northern, one Southern. The project offers links to letters, diaries and newspaper accounts gathered by a team of scholars over the past ten years of the project. The event was moderated by Mr. Basker who solicited comments from Professors Borritt, Weigley, Ayers and Rubin and then all panelists took questions from the students in the audience.
