Book Discussion on [A Political Education]

Andre Schiffrin talked about his book [A Political Education: Coming of Age in Paris and New York], published by Melville House. André Schiffrin was born the son of one of France's most well regarded publishers, in a world peopled by some of the day's leading writers and intellectuals, such as André Gide and Jean-Paul Sartre. But the Nazis marched into Paris on his fifth birthday. Beginning with the family's escape to Casablanca and eventually New York, the book recounts a life spent dominated by writers, ideas, and books. Mr. Schiffrin recounted his life spent in publishing, from his thirty years as publisher of Pantheon Books to his resignation and founding of the non-profit publishing house, The New Press. He was interviewed by cultural critic John Leonard. Mr. Schiffrin also responded to questions from the audience.

Book Discussion on [The Business of Books]

Mr. Schiffrin gave the luncheon address at the third annual meeting for Small and Independent Publishers. The former managing editor of Pantheon Books talked about his book, [The Business of Books: How International Conglomerates Took Over Publishing and Changed the Way We Read], published by his own company. The book focuses on how the publishing industry has changed from the smaller, powerful publishing companies to the media conglomerates where most publishers now depend on each other. The author explained how this might affect the market and whether the larger publishing companies today are more interested in making money than they were a couple of decades ago, and if they still provide the public with the books they want. After his prepared remarks, Mr. Schiffrin answered audience questions.
