Witnesses testified about current fuel efficiency, research and development efforts by manufacturers, the potential costs to consumers of improvements, environmental benefits of better efficiency, and potential impact on energy supplies and policy.
 
 Senators Levin, Feinstein, and Stabenow were the first panel of witnesses.</description>

      <title>USS Nimitz</title>
      <description>The USS Nimitz and its crew were profiled through footage shot while the ship was stationed off the California coast over the summer. Admiral McGinn and Mr. Kreisler talked about the ship's capabilities and procedures and took viewer calls. The Nimitz was commissioned in 1975 and named after World War Two admiral Chester A. Nimitz. It weighs about 97,000 tons and carries a standard complement of 85 aircraft. Two more Nimitz-class carriers are currently under construction, the Harry S. Truman and the Ronald Reagan. The USS Nimitz arrived in the Persian Gulf on October 12.</description>

      <title>Joint Strike Fighter Prototype Contracts</title>
      <description>Secretary Perry announced that Lockheed Martin and Boeing will each build two prototype fighters during the next phase of the Joint Strike Fighter program, which will be used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines as well as the Royal Navy. This next phase will cost about $2.2 billion and the winning proposal will be selected in 2001. The planes are scheduled to enter service in 2008. After Secretary Perry and the other leaders left, several Department of Defense experts on the program took more detailed questions from reporters.</description>
