Dennis Ross emphasized that if Iran were to acquire a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia had stated it would also get one too, thereby setting off even more instability in the region. Senator Simpson was shown mingling with the guests. Then Mr. Hardy, Senator Simpson's former press secretary and chief of staff, talked about writing the book and the total access that he had to Senator Simpson's papers. Senator Simpson also talked about the book and about his life. He told stories about the author, the late Senator Ted Kennedy, and about some of the guests, including former Vice President and Mrs. Cheney, former Secretary Mineta, Librarian of Congress Billington, and Representative Dingell.</description>

      <title>Iraq Study Group Report</title>
      <description>The Iraq Study Group held a press conference on its bipartisan effort to rethink military and political options in Iraq. Earlier in the day the group issues its report the public and to President Bush at the White House, and then went to Capitol Hill to brief members of Congress. The report characterized the situation in Iraq as grave and recommended new diplomatic efforts within the region, changes in the military mission and deployment strategy, and a general reevaluation of U.S. goals in the country. Members of the group also answered questions from reporters.</description>

      <description>A confirmation hearing was held for the Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary nominations of Stewart A. Baker and Julie L. Myers. The nominees testified on their own behalf. Mr. Baker and Ms. Myers also responded to questions and comments from committee members.
 
 Ms. Myers was nominated to become Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Senator Roberts (R-KS) introduced her to the committee. 
 
 Mr. Baker was nominated to become Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Poilcy:  Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Senator McCain (R-AZ) and former Senator Robb (D-VA) introduced him to the committee.</description>

      <description>Witnesses testified about resuming live firing exercises on a U.S. Navy firing range on the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico. A presidential panel recommended that the military resume the exercises and that the range be shut down in five years. The panel also criticized the Navy for not addressing long-held grievances of the people of Vieques, saying the Navy was partially responsible for a 25 percent unemployment rate on the island.
