      <description>Law professor Richard Sander and former [New York Times] correspondent Stuart Taylor talked about their book, [Mismatch: How Affirmative Action Hurts the Students It's Intended to Help, and Why Universities Won't Admit It]. They also presented their thoughts on affirmative action prior to the Supreme Court's hearing of oral arguments in [Fisher v. University of Texas]. They said that they agreed with the initial goals of affirmative action but now believe the system hurts more than helps minorities. Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor speak at the CATO Institute in Washington, D.C. They responded to questions from the audience.</description>

      <title>Racial Profiling</title>
      <description>Witnesses testified on racial profiling and state immigration laws in Alabama and Arizona, relations between law enforcement and African-Americans, as well as anti-terrorism efforts that target American Muslims. One of the witnesses was Senator Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), who had introduced legislation called the 'End Racial Profiling Act'. Witnesses also talked about closing loopholes in the U.S. Department of Justice's racial profiling guidance, and the Justice Department Civil Rights Division's enforcement of federal civil rights laws to prevent profiling by state and local law enforcement agencies.</description>

Among the issues they addressed were the legitimacy of weighing race and ethnicity in accepting applications, the role of government in determining admissions policy, and the social impacts of admissions policies favoring underrepresented races. Following their remarks audience members questioned debaters and voted against using preferential standards.</description>

      <title>Report on Civil Rights</title>
      <description>The speakers gave their report on Assistant Attorney General Lee's work in the area of civil rights. Mr. Bolick said that Mr. Lee was never confirmed by the Senate and that he advanced an extreme ideological agenda. He stated that Mr. Lee has used the resources of the civil rights division to pursue racial preferences in government contracting, employment and education. Mr. Clegg commented that the Senate cannot confirm Mr. Lee because he shredds the constitution if the Senate wants to uphold the constitution. He said that he hopes that President Clinton will not nominate Mr. Lee again for the post of Assistant Attorney General. They took questions from reporters.</description>

      <description>Mr. Broder moderated this panel on the declining importance of class in the U.S. After the opening presentation by Ms. Sawhill and a response by Mr. Lipset, there was a general discussion among all the participants. They examined how much class origins determines a citizen's chances to succeed economically and how the growth of opportunity through improvements in education and other areas and the slower economic growth of the last thirty years have affected and will affect the role class plays in determining a citizen's chances of success. Ms. Sawhill and Daniel P. McMurrer are  the authors of a recent study on the subject.</description>
