      <description>Senior diplomats spoke about the evolution of human rights policy at a day-long conference to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. They spoke about U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War era, the fall of the Soviet Union and communism in Eastern Europe, to current day issues with human rights violations in China, the Middle East, and recent democratic uprisings often referred to as the "Arab Spring."</description>

      <title>Promoting Democracy in the Next Administration</title>
      <description>Last week the presidents of the International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute, Lorne Craner and Ken Wollack respectively, released a report entitled "New Directions for Democracy Promotion." Both authors talked about their report that includes 8 recommendations for the next administration to make promoting democracy as a central pillar in the conduct of U.S. foreign policy. They also discussed their respective organizations, their mission, size, funding, and how they cooperate with each other promoting democratic processes and ideals around the globe, and they responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.</description>

      <title>Promoting the Rule of Law</title>
      <description>A panel discussion was held on moving towards a coherent approach to promoting the rule of law. The panelists discussed human rights and poverty issues including developing a culture of citizenship; an independent, efficient, and accountable judiciary; the training of government officials; and the education of the citizenry. Following their discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
 
 Mr. Gershman moderated the panel, which was part of the American Bar Association's International Rule of Law Symposium.</description>
