      <description>The Senate Judiciary Committee held its fourth day of hearings on the appointment of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated by the retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens. Witnesses called by both the majority and minority members testified about their impressions of Solicitor General Kagan, her record, and their views of her qualifications for a place on the Supreme Court. Witnesses addressed a number of issues including civil rights, gun control, abortion, campaign finance, military recruiting, and Solicitor General Kagan's temperament.</description>

      <description>The Senate Judiciary Committee held its fourth day of hearings on the appointment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated by the retirement of Justice David Souter.
 
 Witnesses called by both the majority and minority members testified about their impressions of Judge Sotomayor, her record, and their views of her qualifications for a place on the Supreme Court. Among the topics they addressed were her approach to various cases, Second Amendment and gun ownership issues, abortion, and property rights. Mr. Cone also testified about her in settling the baseball players strike of 1994.

      <description>Star Parker talked about her book [White Ghetto: How Middle Class America Reflects Inner City Decay], published by Nelson Current. She described the moral collapse in American schools, churches and homes. She urged people to embrace traditional values regarding religion, sex and politics in order to win what she calls the current culture war. She spoke about welfare reform, and said that African Americans should side with Republicans and Christian groups politically to preserve family values. After her presentation she answered audience members' questions.</description>
