Six former U.S. trade representatives discussed U.S. options for expanding trade with countries in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere. TPP is a multi-lateral free-trade agreement, originally signed by Brunei, Singapore, New Zealand and Chile in 2005.

Prospects for the Republican Party in 1992

Clayton Yeutter, former Secretary of Agriculture and current chairman of the Republican National Committee, spoke on the prospects for the Republicans in the elections of 1992 to an audience at the 1991 Washington Conference of the National Grocers Association. Discussing the redistricting occurring in states throughout the nation, Mr. Yeutter said the increase in districts would result in a greater number of contested races in a number of states. He was optimistic about the Republicans' chances to recover from recent losses in the House and Senate in the new districts, and said previous redistricting efforts were slanted against the Republican party. He also said regaining control of the Senate would be crucial to the Republican party in 1992. In responding to questions following his speech, Mr. Yeutter named a number of Democratic senators he considered vulnerable in 1992 because of their "wrong" votes concerning the President's use of force in Iraq before the Persian Gulf war.

Republican National Committee Business Meeting

The Republican National Committee, headed by former Secretary of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter, met in Houston, Texas to hold their annual meeting. During the afternoon business session, Rep. Vander Jagt, chairman of the Republican Campaign Commission, welcomed the Republicans to Houston. He discussed eight words that help define America and the relationship between the American government and the American people: "We, the people," "by his Creator," and "pursuit of." Other speakers continued to laud the vision of the Republican party as it leads the country into the 1990's and beyond. Sen. McConnell, the only Republican challenger in 1984 to defeat a Democratic incumbent, spoke on campaign finance reform, which he said was unnecessary since most Americans want the government to leave them alone. The committee also conducted business concerning the 1992 Republican National Convention, to be held in Houston.

Executive Session

The Republican National Committee held its annual conference in Houston, Texas, to conduct business for the Republican party and make plans for the 1992 campaigns and the 1992 Republican National Convention to be held in Houston. During the executive session, members of the executive committee discussed strategies to be adopted in the approaching 1992 presidential and congressional elections. Chairman Clayton Yeutter discussed some of the minority groups participating in the Republican party, and said the Republicans should target Hispanics in the coming election following the Democratic National Committee's resolution opposing the extension of fast track trade authority for the president. Members of Republican special interest groups presented reports on their agendas in the Republican party, and expressed optimism for the election in 1992.

Governor Roemer On His Recent Party Change

Governor Roemer, governor of Louisiana who recently changed political parties, from Republican to Democrat, was officially welcomed to the Republican party by President Bush in the White House. Gov. Roemer's party change was considered by some to be partially attributable to Louisiana Republican and former Klansman David Duke's consideration of a campaign for the governorship of Louisiana in 1992. Gov. Roemer might have felt Duke's nomination might be hindered by his own renomination for the office in the Republican party. Mr. Duke lost a senatorial election in Louisiana in 1990, although not by the margin more liberal Republicans might have hoped. After meeting with President Bush, Gov. Roemer, Gov. Campbell, and Mr. Yeutter, head of the National Republican party, spoke to reporters in the driveway of the White House. Gov. Roemer said his party change was made through a long process of consideration of the precepts of the Republican party, not a spur of the moment decision.

This is Mr. Yeutter's first address since becoming chairman of the Republican National Committee in January. Mr. Yeutter talked about the Persian Gulf War, praising the political and military leadership in executing a brilliant campaign. He said that many Democrats were surprised at how ready and able America was to conduct a professional, just war because they expected another Vietnam War. Mr. Yeutter talked about the issues important to the Republican Party such as education, agriculture and science research and development, social programs, drug and crime control, and a vital economy.
