Among the topics discussed are Washington's Farewell Address and the many precedents he set for his successors, including what many historians consider to be his most lasting legacy - his decision to relinquish power after only two terms in office. This program is 90 minutes.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Dr. Kass talked about embryonic stem sell research, focusing on scientific issues and values, ethical considerations in both conducting and funding the research, and political opinions and movements involving embryonic stem cell research in a roundtable discussion with correspondents. Following his discussion, the correspondents addressed the issues raised by Dr. Kass.

Recently, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist had given his support to a bill that would expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. The bill had already passed the House (over the objection of majority leadership), but had been stalled in the Senate prior to Sen. Frist's decision. The bill, if passed in the Senate, had been threatened with the first veto of President Bush's presidency. Media reports also indicated that analysts did not expect the bill to pass by a margin large enough to override the president's veto.

Book Discussion on [Gay Marriage]

Mr. Rauch discussed his book, [Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for America], with several American Enterprise Institute scholars. In the book, published by Times Books, Mr. Rauch argues that gay marriage can only have a positive influence on American society, and that conservatives should therefore be in favor of it. He asserts that, far from damaging the institution of marriage, allowing gay marriages would permit gays and their families to benefit from its stabilizing effects. Those who support marriage, the author claims, should also support gay marriage. The participants answered audience members' questions. Meade, Kass and Lott were in the audience.

Book Discussion on [Life, Liberty, and the Defense of Dignity]

Professor Leon Kass discussed his book [Life, Liberty and the Defense of Dignity: The Challenge for Bioethics,] published by Encounter Books. According to Dr. Kass, modern biomedical technology is threatening to create a future reminiscent of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. He believes that scientific effort to master cloning and stem cell research, reproduction, aging, and illness will result in a post-human future that will exclude humanity from the equation. Dr. Kass describes humanity as "our awareness of need, limitation, and mortality to craft a way of being that has engagement, depth, beauty, virtue, and meaning." He calls for a new bioethics and a new biology that will take into account the not only the physical but the social, spiritual and psychological aspects of humanity as well. Following his presentation, Dr. Kass answered questions from members of the audience.
