The panelists generally criticized the administration for not focusing on poverty and Tavis Smiley called on President Obama to hold a "White House Conference on the Eradication of Poverty in America." 
Mr. Smiley's annual forum was titled "Vision for a New America: A Future without Poverty." It was held in the Lisner Auditorium of George Washington University.</description>

      <description>Tavis Smiley and Cornel West, co-hosts of the "Smiley and West" radio program, talked about their recently launched "Poverty Tour," which will take them to 16 poor communities across the U.S. They also responded to telephone calls and electronic communities. Topics included President Obama's economic advisers and he recently passed debt ceiling bill. Professor West in his comments said that he would not support President Obama against a primary challenger but would support him in the presidential election. Mr. Smiley in his remarks talked about President Obama's attempts to compromise with Republican lawmakers, saying that the Democratic base "wants to see that he is a fighter, not a compromiser."

Topics included the possible election of African-American Democratic candidate Barack Obama to be president; the effects of the presidential election on the social, political, and economic future of African-American communities; and the mortgage crisis and the U.S. economy. The rebuilding of parts of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina was discussed and survivor Herreast Harrison described her experiences and the ways in which she helped others.
 
 In the last portion of the forum Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke to the audience about health care, education and her thoughts on her candidacy. She then was questioned by Tavis Smiley. Senator Clinton was the only presidential candidate to accept the invitation to address the forum in person.

      <description>In the first panel of an afternoon session of State of the Black Union 2006 titled, "Defining the African American Agenda, Part II," participants focused on the State of the Black Union 2005 proposal for a covenant with black America. Panelists discussed the challenges facing the black community, ideas proposed in the book, [The Covenant with Black America], and future leadership within the black community. They also talked about the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast communities and the significance of poor federal response efforts to the disaster for future national policy. They also responded to questions submitted by members of the audience.
 
 [The Covenant with Black America], published by Third World Press, was edited by Tavis Smiley who moderated the panel. It outlines ten issues identified by the public: education, criminal justice system, police accountability, healthcare and well being, economic development and employment, housing and community development, participating in the democratic process, information technology, rural communities, and environmental justice.

      <title>Millions More Movement, Morning</title>
      <description>The Millions More Movement commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Million Man March on the National Mall with speeches and performances highlighting the theme of reparation, repair, rebuilding, reconstruction and renewal of the black community. Participants focused on internal methods and programs for self-repair and renewal, as well as the responsibility of the government in fostering a climate of growth for minority movements.
 
 The morning portion of the program included speeches on the goals of the movement, identification of areas of development in the black community, and the presentation of a covenant pledge of action.
 
 Part of the program also highlighted the plight of victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and victims of racism. Coverage of this portion ends abruptly following a point in the program in which audio was lost due to technical difficulties. Parts of remarks by victims' families were lost as a result of the difficulties. Following audio difficulties these remarks continued, and were included on the afternoon recording.</description>
