Mr. Bernstein countered that government assistance provides opportunity to help lift people out of poverty, saying, "If economy isn't creating enough jobs, then it is the role of the public sector to create jobs."

Book Discussion on [Crunch]

Jared Bernstein spoke about his book [Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed? (And Other Unsolved Economic Mysteries)] in which he outlines several economic pressures faced by a majority of Americans. In the book he said that the economy grew 15% from 2000 to 2006 but contended that wages did not follow this growth and have been unable to mirror the rise in common expenditures. Mr. Bernstein presents his argument while answering economic questions such as "what is an economic bubble?" and "why do economists seem to fear inflation?". He also answered questions from the audience.

Jared Bernstein is the author of [All Together Now: Common Sense for a Fair Economy]. He is a senior fellow and director of the Living Standards Program at the Economic Policy Institute.

Book Discussion on [All Things Being Equal]

The co-editors talked about their book, [All Things Being Equal: Instigating Opportunity in an Inequitable Time], published by New Press.

While polls show that 80 percent of Americans believe it is still possible to work your way up from poverty to wealth, in fact the American ideal of opportunity for all is at a crossroads. Class mobility is at an all-time low, racial and gender wage gaps are through the roof, and unequal access to health care threatens the health and economic security of millions of Americans. Yet we have it in our power to expand opportunity for everyone in our country. This and other critical ideas about the state of opportunity are documented in All Things Being Equal, the first book from The Opportunity Agenda, an important new voice for reform and improvement across the social spectrum.

Half critique, half road-map-for-the-future, All Things Being Equal includes eight original essays by top-notch thinkers pointing to areas in American life where opportunity is missing and showing us how to instigate it.

Book Discussion on [It's Getting Better All the Time]

Mr. Moore talked about the book he co-authored with Julian Simon, [It's Getting Better All the Time: 100 Greatest Trends of the Last 100 Years], published by Cato Institute. The book compiles data of how life in America has improved more since 1900 than in all previous centuries combined. It covers not only major technological advances, but the details of the obliteration of diseases, the accumulation of material wealth and increased opportunities for ownership. Mrs. Simon, the widow of a co-author, also commented on the book. Mr. Bernstein presented an opposing view to the author's statistics and proposed that expanding government intervention and regulations made these trend advancements possible. After their remarks the panel responded to questions from the audience.
