Q&A with Evan Thomas

Evan Thomas talked about [Ike's Bluff: President Eisenhower's Secret Battle to Save the World], his narrative of the president's 1953-1961 term in office. In the book he suggested that President Eisenhower used the threat of nuclear war to prevent open conflict with the Soviet Union while never fully revealing just how far he was willing to go in deploying the weapons. He also detailed the personal aspects of Eisenhower and his presidency, including his relationship with his wife Mamie, his temper and health problems, and the 800 rounds of golf he played during his presidency. Topics included his relations with his contemporaries, including Central Intelligence Agency Director Allen Dulles, General Curtis LeMay, who pushed for a preemptive nuclear strike against the Soviets, and members of the press such as leading critic Joseph Alsop. Video clips were shown of Eisenhower home movies and his farewell address. Mr. Thomas also reacted to clips of previous appearances on C-SPAN.

Book Discussion on [The War Lovers]

Evan Thomas, assistant managing editor of Newsweek, recounts the lead-up to the Spanish-American War and profiles six men who he asserts were responsible for America's involvement, Teddy Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge, President William McKinley, William Randolph Hearst, Thomas Reed, and William James. The author examined the explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, and argued that there was no evidence implicating the Spanish for the attack. He contends that the incident was trumped up to spur support for war. Evan Thomas discussed his book at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C.

Evan Thomas talked about his book [Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign, 1941-1945], published by Simon and Schuster. He described the Pacific naval campaign of World War II, focusing on American naval officers Admiral William Halsey and Commander Ernest Evans and Japanese officers Admiral Takeo Kurita and Admiral Matome Ugaki. Those four commanders confronted one another for four days in October 1944 in the pivotal naval engagement in and around the Philippine Islands known as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. This battle was the death knell for the Imperial Japanese Navy and marked the end of an ancient mode of ship-to-ship fighting rendered obsolete by modern weaponry and communications.
