Book Discussion on [Schools For Misrule]

Walter Olson reports that many political leaders who influence what the author considers poor national policy are graduates of the nation's premiere law schools. Mr. Olson relays that lawyers hold approximately 60% of seats in the Senate and 40% in the House of Representatives and argues that poor policy ideas born in law schools have migrated to the status of national policy debates. Walter Olson discussed his book at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Gun Liability

Witnesses testified about gun liability legislation. The bill under consideration, H.R. 1036, the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act", was designed "to prohibit civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition for damages resulting from the misuse of their products by others." Supporters of the legislation claimed it was necessary in order to protect companies from frivolous lawsuits designed to bankrupt the firearms industry. Opponents voiced concerns that the bill was unnecessary and could prevent legitimate claims against negligent gun makers and sellers.

Book Discussion on [The Rule of Lawyers]

Former Attorney General Thornburgh (1988-1991) introduced Mr. Olson. Mr. Olson discussed his book, [The Rule of Lawyers: How the New Litigation Elite Threatens America's Rule of Law], published by Truman Talley Books. Mr. Olson contended that the use of class action suits by private lawyers is out of control. He asserted that excessive settlements from lawsuits against the producers of tobacco, asbestos, automobiles and breast implants are inflicting damage on the nation's economy. He also said that lawyers receive large fees for themselves, relatively small awards for their clients, and drive entire segments of business into bankruptcy. A question and answer period followed Mr. Olson's remarks.
