Coretta Scott King Funeral

President Bush and three former presidents, national politicians, as well as civil rights and religious leaders paid tribute to the life and memory of Coretta Scott King at a funeral service held at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia. They talked about her contributions to the civil rights movement, efforts on behalf of minorities, and marriage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mrs. King's daughter Bernice, a minister, gave the eulogy, saying her mother "was not just a national figure, she was a global leader." Poet Maya Angelou and the Kings' three other children also attended the service. Some speeches were later highlighted in news media reports for their political overtones and criticisms of President Bush.
The service featured musical performances by Stevie Wonder, Michael Bolton, and Bebe and Cece Winans. The New Birth Total Praise Choir sang some of Mrs. King's favorite gospel songs, including "Amazing Grace."

Texas Cult Standoff Part 2

The subcommittee heard from the heads of the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on the recent events near Waco, Texas. In late February 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms assaulted the compound of an armed religious cult near Waco to arrest the cult's leader on federal firearms statute violations. The cult repulsed the raid with gunfire, and lay under siege from government agents for 51 days. On April 19, the cult's compound burned to the ground after the FBI began to pressure cult members to surrender with the use of tear gas. Mr. Sessions, Mr. Higgins and other representatives of the agencies testified on the government's decision making processes that led to the original raid as well as the pressure tactics on the cult's final day.

President John F. Kennedy Assassination Files

The committee heard testimony on S.Joint Res. 282, the Assassination Materials Disclosure Act of 1992, legislation to create an independent commission that would speed the release of classified files on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Since the release of the Warren Commission report in the 1960's, questions have been raised as to the nature of Kennedy's assassination. The questions culminated in the popular 1991 movie "JFK," which hypothesized a conspiracy between the Central Intelligence Agency, the Mafia, and the Department of Defense to kill the president. Calls have been made to open the CIA's files on the assassination to either end or support conspiracy theories. The Department of Justice earlier in the year opposed the early release of the documents, despite support for their release by the FBI and the CIA.

Significant Violent Crime Initiative

Mr. Barr and Mr. Sessions met with reporters to present the Significant Violent Crime Initiative. They described the initiative, which would reassign approximately 300 counterintelligence agents to violent crime investigations in 39 cities across the country. The transfer of personnel is the result of the breakup of, and the reduced threat of espionage by, the former Soviet Union. Mr. Barr said the agents would assist state and local authorities in eliminating violent street gangs across the nation.
