In the book the author details General George Washington's struggles as he dealt with an ineffective Congress and a Continental Army on the verge of mutiny. He responded to a question from a member of the audience.
This was part of the Author Series Programs at the Social Law Library.</description>

The book recounted his feuds with Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. He also described President Adams' relationship with his wife and his Christian beliefs. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.</description>

      <title>The Importance of Being Archival</title>
      <description>Moderated by Mr. Fowler, panelists discussed archives, archival research and their own use of archives in writing their books. Richard Pipes shared stories about doing archival research in Russia for his book [The Unknown Lenin]. Pauline Maier described her use of archives in England for her book [From Resistance to Revolution] and the value of alternative sources of primary research. Blanche Wiesen Cook talked about suing the United States government to obtain information for her book [The Declassified Eisenhower] and the recent policies of the Bush administration pertaining to archival access. All of the panelists answered questions from members of the audience following their remarks.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Jack: A Life Like No Other]</title>
      <description>Mr. Perret talked about his biography of John F. Kennedy, [Jack: A Life Like No Other], published by Random House. During his presentation, Mr. Perret explored John F. Kennedy's admiration of Winston Churchill, his sexual exploits, physical ailments, family life, and his position on civil rights. The author contended that Kennedy skillfully crafted his own persona, and exceeded the plans of his father. Mr. Perret's research materials included personal diaries, taped conversations from the Oval Office, declassified government documents, family correspondence, and interviews that have recently become available. A question and answer period followed Mr. Perret's remarks.</description>

      <description>In the sixth of a series of life portraits of American presidents, the guests discussed the life and career of John Quincy Adams and responded to audience telephone calls. They also talked about Adams's wife, Louisa Catherine Adams. Mr. Fowler displayed the large collection of Adams papers and Ms. Walker discussed the many volumes of Adams's diaries. A teacher from John Quincy Adams Elementary School was interviewed by telephone. Mr. Byrd participated by remote connection from Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.</description>
