Campaign Finance Investigation Day 5

Committee members continued their investigation into campaign fund-raising abuses during the 1996 election. Several White House aides testified about the contributions and access of Johnny Chung, a Chinese businessman all of whose contributions were later returned by the Democratic National Committee, to the White House. Republicans charged that accepting some of his money at the White House violated campaign laws while Democrats countered that Republicans broke this same law during the campaign.

Whitewater Investigation, Part 3

During day two of Whitewater hearings on Capitol Hill, the House Banking Committee met for a second time today to look into certain aspects of the Whitewater investigation. According to guidelines previously established, the hearing can focus only on White House contacts with Treasury Department officials on Whitewater issues and on events surrounding the death of Vincent Foster. Former White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum was the primary witness of the morning sessions. Later in the afternoon, several administration officials, including former Chief of Staff Mack McLarty and presidential Advisor George Stephanopoulos, spoke about the Madison Trust investigation and possible White House tampering in that investigation.
