Congress and Partisanship

Six former members of the Senate and House of Representatives talked about ways to end hyper-partisanship in Congress. Topics included the congressional schedule, comity among members, partisanship at the congressional committee level, the role of the president in bridging disagreements, electoral and redistricting reform, public input and social media, and the budget process. The panelists took questions from audience members, Twitter, and Facebook.

Pending Free Trade Agreements, South Korea Amendments

The Senate Finance Committee held a "mock" markup hearing to debate amendments to free trade agreements with South Korea, Columbia, and Panama.
The hearing is referred to as a "mock" markup because, under the Trade Promotion Authority Act, the markup hearing is the only time Congress may offer amendments to bills submitted by a presidential administration. Final versions of these types of bills are only voted on as for or against.

Pending Trade Agreements, Panama & Colombia

In this portion of the Senate Finance Committee "mock" markup , members entertained amendments to the Panama and Columbia free trade agreements.
The Finance Committee considered the bills during a "mock" markup because Congress cannot offer amendments to the final implementing bills submitted by the administration under the Trade Promotion Authority Act - also known as "fast track" - procedures. Committee mock markups are the only opportunities for Congress to offer amendments to administration proposals. Following administration review of any amendments that the Finance and Ways and Means Committees approve on the draft implementing bills, final versions of the implementing bills will be submitted to Congress for an up-or-down vote.
