Book Discussion on [The Miner's Canary]

Ms. Guinier discussed the ideas outlined in her book [The Miner's Canary,] published by Harvard University Press. Along with her co-author, Gerald Torres, Guinier uses the example of a canary that has been sent down the mineshaft to test for poison in the air as a metaphor for racial injustices in America today. The author warns that ignoring race is detrimental to our society and shows that race and power are present at every level of interaction, from classrooms to the corporate world. In what they refer to as political race, the authors argue that only cross-racial coalitions can illuminate these hierarchies of privilege. Guinier brought her point across using statistics, theories and stories of racial inequalities before taking questions from members of the audience.

Ms. Guinier spoke to reporters on the morning after President Clinton announcing he had withdrawn her name from nomination for the position of Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the Department of Justice. President Clinton said he had withdrawn her name because he disagreed with many of her views concerning civil rights and an extended fight in the Senate for her nomination would be disruptive. She appeared at the news conference flanked by her husband and their child.

The Maturing Black Lobby

In this panel, members of the Black Political Scientist Association present a series of papers and lectures on the effectiveness of the Afro-American lobby. It is argued that this lobby has become more effective over the years. To illustrate this point, two cases are used: black voting rights, and South African sanctions. With regard to voting rights, it is argued that the civil rights coalition, led by blacks, has developed into a mature lobbying organization since its inception in the 1950s.
