Cost of the Iraq War

Linda Bilmes spoke about the costs of the war in Iraq, which she projected to reach $5 trillion. Those projections exceed the original figures in her book [The Three Trillion Dollar War], which she co-authored with economist Joseph Stiglitz in 2008. She outlined the various sorts of expenditures, including rising veterans benefits, and criticized the government for lack of proper war accounting. She theorized that the war triggered Federal Reserve decisions that contributed to the financial crisis of 2008. She responded to questions from the audience.
"The Trillion Dollar War-And Counting" was part of the program "America's Second-Longest War: Taking Stock" held by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace on the tenth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

Witnesses focused on the extent to which an outdated and weak regulatory system contributed to the current market turmoil and whether adoption of a stronger and more robust financial regulatory system could contribute to a more rapid recovery in the financial markets and the economy.

Some exchanges between committee members became somewhat contentious. At one point Chairman Frank took an extra five minutes to respond to Representative Garrett's charges that Democratic members had been responsible for inadequate regulation. In the resonse Representative Frank outlined several bipartisan votes on regulatory measures and said charges that they were the product of Democratic-led policy initiatives were only "in (Rep.
Book Discussion on [Globalization and Its Discontents]

Mr. Stiglitz, author of [Globalization and Its Discontents], published by W.W. Norton and Company, discussed opposing views on globalization. He defines globalization as the closer integration of peoples of the world that is made possible by reducing artificial barriers. Mr. Stiglitz argues that globalization can be viewed from two perspectives: (1) Globalization has brought unmitigated disaster to many developing countries, (2) Globalization has brought unprecedented prosperity to all countries. Though he agrees that there is legitimacy in the view that globalization has brought disaster to developing countries, he maintains that reform within the IMF would provide economic stability to countries facing an economic downturn. He says that globalization can be a positive force, but it must be managed effectively.

In the first panel of a discussion on the costs of regulation, Mr. Stiglitz and Mr. King offered Democratic and Republican perspectives on federal regulations.
