They discussed transportation security, cyber threats, and efforts to combat violent extremist groups. General Jones in his comments said that 2012 was the year that the U.S. would have to deal with Iran "one way or the other." The program included questions from the audience.</description>

David Shedd described three parts to intelligence: mission, people and the budget.       <title>Counterterrorism and the Role of Intelligence</title>
      <description>Judge Richard Posner spoke on the topic, "The Role of Intelligence in Counterterrorism."  In his remarks he talked about intelligence gathering and sharing methods, the role of the National Intelligence Director in managing national security information, the role of law enforcement in counterterrorism, and intelligence policy in reaction to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He was also critical of a rush to implement reform after the September 11 attacks and proposed some reevaluation of intelligence operations. 
 
 Judge Posner, author of [Preventing Surprise Attacks: Intelligence Reform in the Wake of 9/11], was an expert on the economic, organizational and legal challenges of intelligence reform. John McLaughlin, a former acting CIA director, moderated a question and answer period.</description>

      <title>North American Ballistic Missile Threat</title>
      <description>Committee members heard testimony from two former CIA directors and others on the nature of the nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction threat to North America over the next fifteen years. A report last year by the intelligence community on this topic highlighted sharp differences between the administration and the Republican Congress on this issue and therefore the need for a missile defense system. Mr. Gates also chaired an independent review panel on this 1995 report. The witnesses testified about these two reports, as well as their personal estimates of the missile threats to the U.S. and how the U.S. can better deal with them.</description>
