Remembering Pearl Harbor

On the anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, the guests remembered the events of fifty years ago. The guests discussed what the situation was like in the United States before the Japanese attack and the reaction of American citizens as their country moved from an isolationist position into war. Phones were opened and Professor Biel and Professor Weintraub responded to viewers' questions and comments. A reconstructed video of President Roosevelt's declaration of war and the House debate that followed were shown. Interviews with Congressman Jamie Whitten and former Representative and Senator Albert Gore, Sr., who both voted on the war resolution, were also shown. A former journalist who was in Washington at the time of the Japanese attack and a retired Japanese-American army colonel who fought for the United States discussed their memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Colonel Ishio stressed that Japanese-Americans are loyal Americans as he responded to viewers' calls.
