Iraq's Compliance with U.N. Resolutions

The participants in the discussion on CNN's Newsmaker Saturday spoke on Iraq's compliance with post-Persian Gulf war U.N. resolutions limiting the type and amount of weapons Iraq may own. Iraq previously admitted to attempting to hide materials used in the construction of nuclear bombs from a U.N. inspection team, and must declare all of its nuclear related material to the U.N. before July 25. President Bush previously said Iraq was "lying" about how many weapons it owned, and sought the support of other Western leaders at the Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations in London for the use of military force to ensure that Iraq does not attain nuclear capability.

Rethinking National Security

Participants in the 1991 American Assembly convened to determine the final public policy initiatives to be published under the name of the 1991 forum whose topic was "Rethinking America's Security." Assembly members discussed the group's conclusions on the military, technological, and economic security of the United States. The group went over the document to be published containing the group's conclusions, and refined the phrasing of the predetermined public policy initiatives. The American Assembly brings together approximately 60 public policy leaders in Arden House in Harriman, New York, to discuss a current topic in public policy. Through a consensus building process, the group determines specific initiatives and conclusions on public policy which are then published and distributed by the American Assembly following the end of the conference.

Rethinking National Security

The American Assembly brought together 60 public policy researchers and leaders of various constituencies in America to discuss America's security. By applying a consensus building technique to the discussion, the American Assembly determines recommendations on national issues, which it then distributes to national public policy leaders. The Assembly will distribute 50,000 copies of the conference's recommendations to public policy leaders following the conclusion of the forum. The topic of the American Assembly held in May and June of 1991 was America's national security at home and abroad following the end of the Cold War and the Persian Gulf war.
