      <description>Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced that he would not run in his ruling Kadima party's internal election on September 17, 2008, and would step down afterward so that the new chairman could form a government. He criticized police investigations of corruption allegations against him and that he was choosing the public good over justice for himself. Prime Minister Olmert made the televised announcement from his official residence in Jerusalem.
