After Words with George Weigel

Mr. Meacham interviewed George Weigel about his book [God's Choice: Pope Benedict XVI and the Future of the Catholic Church], published by HarperCollins. In the book, this biographer of Pope John Paul II chronicles the transition between John Paul's papacy and that of his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, in this blend of history, biography, analysis and forecasting. He reviewed the political and social issues that face the global agenda of the Vatican: including its growing populations in Africa, Latin America and parts of the post-communist world, its struggles in western Europe and Asia and the scandals it has faced in the United States.

George Weigel, a Roman Catholic theologian, is a senior fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center and the director of the Catholic Studies program at EPPC. His book include [Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II], published by Cliff Street Books, and [The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics Without God], published by Basic Books.

Jon Meacham has written cover stories on religious issues and the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal for [Newsweek].

In his book the author linked Europe's involvement in world wars, totalitarian systems, and its de-population to its lack of spiritual aspirations. Mr. Weigel was joined by [Washington Post columnist] Anne Applebaum to discuss what he viewed as "Europe's problem" and the debate over a new European Union constitution. They also answered questions from the audience.
