Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Dr. Kass talked about embryonic stem sell research, focusing on scientific issues and values, ethical considerations in both conducting and funding the research, and political opinions and movements involving embryonic stem cell research in a roundtable discussion with correspondents. Following his discussion, the correspondents addressed the issues raised by Dr. Kass.

Recently, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist had given his support to a bill that would expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. The bill had already passed the House (over the objection of majority leadership), but had been stalled in the Senate prior to Sen. Frist's decision. The bill, if passed in the Senate, had been threatened with the first veto of President Bush's presidency. Media reports also indicated that analysts did not expect the bill to pass by a margin large enough to override the president's veto.
