Book Discussion on [How Bush Rules: Chronicles of a Radical Regime]

Sidney Blumenthal talked about his book, [How Bush Rules: Chronicles of a Radical Regime], published by Princeton University Press. The bulk of the book is a compilation of articles that Mr. Blumenthal, formerly a senior aide for President Clinton, originally authored for Slate.com and [The Guardian] British newspaper between 2003 and 2006. He said that President Bush is deliberately working to increase the power of the presidency. Mr. Blumenthal criticized President Bush for trying to avoid congressional oversight, relying on one-party rule, squelching internal debate, and granting his vice president an unusual amount of power and authority. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.

The Real State of U.S. Foreign Policy

Mr. Clemons moderated a half-day forum on the future of U.S. foreign policy. Participants talked about successes and failures in building post-Cold War strategies, assessing and meeting emerging threats to global security, and current policies in combating terrorism and operations in Iraq.

Mr. O'Sullivan cited the Bush doctrine of pre-emption in the post-9/11 environment and the push for UN reform as pivotal moves on the administration's part to reshape foreign policy and the international landscape. A self-described neo-conservative realist, he also made mention of the new unfolding possibilities for a U.S. role between Israel and Palestine, not despite but as a result of the democratic election of Hamas to the helm of Palestinian leadership.
In Session 2, "Global Outlooks: American Grand Strategy and Widening Arcs of Instability," panelists assessed international economic security, the successes and failures of the war on terror, roots and consequences of the strategy of democratization, and the false assumptions underlying current U.S. policy-making.
In Session 3, "Taking Stock of the U.S. National Interest: Comments on Post Cold War Strategies That Address Tomorrow's Global Stress Points," panelists talked about democratic values and the War on Terror, but the panel arguing that the current course of action was not sustainable for the future.
General Clark gave the keynote address focusing on the lessons learned in his career as an Army officer, current operations in Iraq, and emerging security threats around the world.

Understanding Saddam Hussein

Dr. Post, who had studied Saddam Hussein closely, and Mr. Blumenthal, who had studied George Bush, spoke about how the personalities of the two leaders affected world events and the possibility of war. Mr. Blumenthal said that George Bush's indecisiveness and failure of foreign policy had partially contributed to the current U.S. military buildup in the Persian Gulf, while Dr. Post said that Saddam Hussein's desire for power and respect in the Middle East would not let him withdraw from Kuwait.

The Conservative Movement

This panel discussion explores the topic of the impact of the Reagan presidency in the both foreign and domestic policy. It also addresses the issues of Congressional power during the Reagan administration, the question of realignment, the rise of neo-conservatism and corruption in government. Overall, the panelists agree that the Reagan era was sucessful, but that this sucess was based upon factors other than the president's own decisions. Reagan himself felt comfortable with the politics of avoidance. The panel closes with a discussion of the Bush administration and what its immediate agenda should be. There is some discussion of how the problems which face Bush are a result of the Reagan administration.
