As a reporter Ms. Carpenter covered the wives of several presidents and then worked for Lady Bird Johnson as press secretary. Mr. Rosebush served as chief of staff for Nancy Reagan and is the author of the book [First Lady: Public Wife]. Mr. Costello was deputy press secretary for Roslynn Carter. The participants described their experiences in the White House Office of the First Lady and discussed the role of the first lady within the context of the presidency and women's history. Brief video clips of Mamie Eisenhower and Bess Truman were shown.</description>
