      <description>The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) convened their First Annual 2008 National Black Women's Town Hall Meeting at their headquarters. After opening remarks by Dorothy Height, the Landmark of Greatness Award was presented to Barbara McKinzie. 
 
 Blanche Williams moderated two panels. Among the issues addressed were health care, education poverty, economic and labor concerns, and enforcing community standards. The first panel included Faye Wattleton, Julianne Malveaux, Daphne Valerius, and Sheryl Huggins-Salomon. The second panel included Eleanor Hinton-Hoytt, Jane Smith, Melanie Campbell, Tricia Bent-Goodley, and Avis Jones-DeWeever.</description>

Among the issues they addressed were current strengths and weaknesses of the Act, the likely impact on minority groups and immigrants of a failure to reauthorize the legislation, redistricting procedures, and election procedures used to define eligible voters. They criticized the media's change of focus to looting and vandalism rather than the desperation of the people. They also called for American businesses and citizens to help their fellow citizens saying, "The people are not refugees, they are American citizens."
