Can the State Mandate Child Health Care?

The panelists discussed whether or not the state has the right or responsibility to ensure that a child receives standard medical care, even if parents refuse such care. The law appears to have taken a stricter stance with children than adults when their lives are in danger. Christian Scientists have been accused of practicing child abuse under the protecting of freedom of religion rights. Mr. Talbot said the real questions is whether the government should become an enforcer of orthodox and traditional methods of medical care, rather than allowing the option of spiritual healing. Mr. Presser pointed out that practicing medicine is still considered an art to a certain point, so it can allow for the incorporation of an individuals' personal curative powers. Christian Scientists, though, will usually chose only faith healing methods.
