Mothers and Daughters in Politics

The forum was a part of a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the National Women's Political Caucus. The goal of the caucus is to elect more women to political office. The speakers at the forum explained how to pass on the feminist legacy to the next generation and how to encourage women's political leadership. Each panelist was allowed three minutes to describe her experience in politics and her assessment of feminism. Ms. Friedan, the first speaker, was one of the first women to define the issues of women's participation in society. She discussed the importance of mother-daughter relations and how feminist thinking needs to be instilled in every generation of women. Ms. Ferraro announced her plans to run for the Senate and described the changes in women's politics since her childhood. Her daughter, Donna, explained the pressures involved with living up to her mother's feminist ideals. Anika Dyrstad explained the transition of her mother's career as she moved from holding a mayoral position to becoming the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. Representative Slaughter (D-NY) described her Southern upbringing and how tradition played a role in her decisions about pursuing a political career. Ms. Meehan discussed why young women identify their role models by beauty or fame instead of by knowledge and political power. Her daughters described the encouragement and support they have received from their feminist mother.

National Women's Political Caucus Gala Party

The National Women's Political Caucus marked its twentieth anniversary in Washington with a celebration of the twenty years of history travelled by the organization and its members. The party saluted the founding members of the political caucus, and featured speeches on the advances made by the organization from notable women's rights advocates including Linda Ellerbee and Gloria Steinem, and politicians including Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro. Speakers described their experiences in working in politics during the beginning and rise of the women's rights movement. The National Women's Political Caucus was formed in 1971 to promote issues important to women in Washington politics and to encourage greater participation in the political process by women. Twenty years later, the caucus continues to advance the cause for women in and out of the halls of Congress.
