Crime Legislation

President Clinton visited with students at Hillcrest High School in Chicago. In his speech, the President focused on crime and violence in America, especially as it affects young people. Specific topics included the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, the effort to ban assault weapons, increased police protection on our streets, community policing strategies, and other Crime Bill provisions including safe schools and "three strikes and you're out." The President answered questions from students on these topics: affordable health care; funding for college educations; funding for less fortunate communities to fight drugs and gang activities; improving the public school system; and the Administration's effort to help the nation's homeless population. The President went to Chicago in part to campaign for the re-election of Representative Rostenkowski who faced a difficult Democratic primary in the following weeks. Representative Rostenkowski fell from favor following the disclosure that he is under investigation for illegally converting federal stamps for personal funds.
