      <description>Ken Hechler, former speechwriter and aide of President Truman, talked about civil liberties and the Truman administration. He was interviewed by President Truman's eldest grandson, Clifton Truman Daniel.
"President Truman's Veto of the McCarran Act and Its Aftermath" was a program of the 2011 Symposium, "The Civil Liberties Legacy of Harry S. Truman." It was held at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel.</description>

      <title>Lessons on International Justice</title>
      <description>A discussion was held on Nazi crimes during World War II and the Nuremberg trials. Ken Hechler was a combat historian who interviewed Nazi leaders. Douglas Neckers is a scientist concerned about the involvement of scientists in war. Eli Rosenbaum has been a "Nazi hunter" for thirty years. Topics included concepts of justice, how people become involved in war crimes, and deterrence. Gregory Peterson moderated. They responded to questions from students in the audience.
This was part of the "International Justice Past and Present" session of the Summer Institute for Human Rights &amp; Genocide Studies, where students met people who had lived through significant historical events. This July 21, 2010, session was held at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown, N.Y.</description>

      <title>President Truman and General MacArthur</title>
      <description>Ken Hechler, former White House assistant to President Truman, was interviewed by Robert Watson about President Truman's relationship with General Douglas MacArthur. General MacArthur led the United Nations command during the Korean Conflict until he was relieved of his command by Harry S. Truman on April 11, 1951, after MacArthur continued to contradict the administration over the expansion of war. 
This was the opening program on May 14, 2010, of the 8th Annual Harry S. Truman Legacy Symposium, held at the Truman Little White House in Key West.</description>

      <title>Freedom to Serve Forum, Panel 1</title>
      <description>A panel discussion was held on the argument that desegregation would impair military efficiency and unit cohesion and why President Truman chose to issuing an executive order desegregating the military. Opening remarks were made by President Truman's grandson and moderator Juan Williams.
Major General Vance Coleman (Ret.), who served in the Korean War, and Oliver Vincent Shields, who served during World War II, talked about their experiences of serving in segregated Army units. 
"The History of Racial Discrimination in the U.S. Military" was the first panel of the "Freedom to Serve -- Then and Now" forum honoring the 61st anniversary of President Truman's signing of Executive Order 9981 that ended racial segregation in the armed forces. The forum was held in the auditorium of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. CT on Monday, July 27, 2009. The event was co-sponsored by Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.</description>

      <description>Secretary of Defense Robert Gates hosted a ceremony honoring the 60th anniversary of the signing of Executive Orders 9980 and 9981 integrating the armed forces and the federal civil service. The ceremony included a Presentation of the Colors, the national anthem, an invocation, and a video of remarks by Army General William Ward from Stuttgart, Germany.
 
 Speakers included historian Michael Gardner, author of [Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks], and former Representative Ken Hechler, a White House assistant and speechwriter for President Truman.</description>

      <title>President Truman and Civil Rights</title>
      <description>The program "To Secure These Rights: Truman and Civil Rights" was held to honor and reflect upon the 58th anniversary of the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces by Executive Order 9981 issued July 26, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman. Moderated by Mr. Kemper, Gerald Early and Carol Anderson discussed the civil rights successes and failures of the Truman administration. They were joined by former Rep. Hechler for the question and answer session. 
 
 Professor Early is a noted essayist and American culture critic. Professor Anderson is the author of [Eyes Off the Prize: The United Nations and the African American Struggle for Human Rights, 1944-1955.] Ken Hechler, special assistant in the Truman White House and the only U.S. Representative to march at Selma, is the author of [Working with Truman] and [The Bridge at Remagen].
  
 The event took place in the historic Gem Theater.</description>
