Education Secretary Arne Duncan called on community leaders to step up efforts to ensure safety in schools in response to the previous week's school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, in his keynote address at a school safety forum at Neval Thomas Elementary School. Secretary Duncan said the recent mass shootings have "fundamentally changed" the world and addressed the need for comprehensive protocols and gun control measures, including access to mental health care, to protect students and teachers from violence.
Teacher Absences

The Center for American Progress released a report which found that the average teacher is absent 10 days per school year. They extrapolated this number to show that when the average student completes 12th grade, they would have accumulated 2/3 of a school year being taught by a substitute teacher, at a total cost of $4 billion.

The panel discussed the implications of the report as well as the study of teacher absences in general. They answered questions from the audience. Cynthia Brown moderated.
