Book Discussion on [The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America]

Kathrine Newman and Victor Chen talked about their co-authored book, [The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America], published by Beacon Press. In their book Katherine Newman and Victor Chen researched America's "missing class" that the authors contend consists of 57 million people that live between middle class and poverty. Ms. Newman and Mr. Chen profiled this economic grouping of people that make $20,000 to $40,000 per year for a family of four that work without government assistance to remain financially solvent.

Katherine Newman was a sociology and public affairs professor at Princeton University. She was the author of eight books that included "No Shame in My Game: The Working Poor in the Inner City" and "Falling from Grace: Downward Mobility in the Age of Affluence."

Victor Chen was the founding editor and president of INTHEFRAY magazine. He was a doctoral candidate in sociology and social policy at Harvard University.
