      <title>Book Discussion on [Ida: A Sword Among Lions]</title>
      <description>Paula Giddings talked about her book [Ida: A Sword Among Lions, Ida B. Wells and the Campaign Against Lynching], published by Amistad. Ida B. Wells (1862-1931), born to slaves in Mississippi, became a leading activist. Professor Giddings talked about the details of lynching and about Ida Wells' investigation into the social background of lynching. Other topics included her life story and her career of activism. After a discussion with Eric Arnesen, Professor Giddings responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

Richard Brookhiser is the author of [George Washington on Leadership], published by Basic Books. They talked about the leadership skills of these two presidents, focusing on their business experiences as well as their military roles. Other topics included their education, self confidence, and temperment. They responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <description>Steven Gillon talked with James Warren about his book [The Pact: Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and the Rivalry That Defined a Generation] (Oxford University Press, June 3, 2008). He talked about the similarities and differences between President Bill Clinton and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and how the two men worked together. The book focuses on an October 1997 bipartisan compromise on Social Security and Medicare that was derailed by the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Mr. Gillon talked about the cultural response to the 1960s which he believes underlies the divisions in the country. Mr. Gillon responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq]</title>
      <description>Richard Engel talked about his book [War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq] by Simon and Schuster. He said that Iraq has had five different wars since the U.S. invasion: a war of shock and awe when the invasion initially occurred; nation building immediately after the fall of the government of Saddam Hussein; insurgency; full civil war; and the status quo with the troop buildup. He said that each war necessitated different policies by the Iraqi and U.S. government. He also talked about the effect in Iraq of the policies of different commanders. He answered questions from the audience.
