      <description>Women civil rights leaders honored attorney Barbara Arnwine for her achievements in racial justice and civil rights. Then they discussed the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and current issues, including recent voter ID laws and their impact on the right to vote, racial profiling of young African Americans and Latinos, and the Senate holding up President Obama's judicial nominees. 
Trice Edney Communications held its third annual luncheon and forum in celebration of Women's History Month and the 186th anniversary of the Black Press, titled "Stateswomen for Justice - Honing the Vision: The Next 50 Years," at the National Press Club.</description>

Speakers included Jesse Jackson and Representative John Conyers (D-MI). President Nixon used the term "War on Drugs" to promote his drug control initiatives, and subsequent administrations have continued variations of those polices.</description>

Among the issues they addressed were the state of the economy, the plight of the urban poor, the future of race relations, and ways to encourage community-building.

      <title>History of Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday</title>
      <description>Congressman Conyers led a discussion of the legislative history of efforts to establish a federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the continuing significance of the Reverend Dr. King's life. The Congressional Black Caucus and its co-founder Rep. Conyers were leaders in that effort. After their presentations, the panelists responded to audience members' questions.
 
 In November 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed into law legislation declaring the third Monday in January as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday, to celebrate the birthday and life of the slain civil rights leader. It had been 15 years since Dr. King's assassination.</description>

      <title>Poverty, Race and Public Policy</title>
      <description>The theme of the Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference was, "Changing Course, Confronting Crises, Continuing the Legacy."  Moderated by Ed Gordon, panelists discussed the links between poverty, race, and public policy. Topics included the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, minimum wage and the erosion of workers' pay, new unions, lack of political clout, persistence of racial segregation for African Americans and Latinos at all income levels, poverty in female-headed households, concentration of poverty in neighborhoods which affects the schools, social issues such as teenage pregnancy, and the movement of the black middle class to the suburbs that intensifies the concentration of poverty in poor black neighborhoods. It was noted that the gap between the haves and have-nots disproportionately affects African Americans. After their remarks the panelists responded to audience members' questions.</description>

      <title>Opening News Conference</title>
      <description>Foundation officials announced the theme of the Annual Legislative Conference, "Changing Course, Confronting Crises, Continuing the Legacy."  Officers from Dell Corporation and others described the AVOICE project, a virtual online library that will host documents and photographs from the private papers of Congressional Black Caucus members, and showed a brief video tape. CBC members talked about the legislative issues forums they would be conducting during the three-day conference.
 
 Co-chairs of the conference were Reps. Kilpatrick and Lee.</description>
