      <description>The National Archives hosted a discussion on a 2011 case involving stolen historical documents. Investigators recovered over ten thousand documents from a Manhattan residence after two robbers were caught stealing documents from the Maryland Historical Society. To curb future theft, the National Archives formed the Holdings Protection Team to raise awareness and improve communication of security issues among employees.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [A Matter of Simple Justice]</title>
      <description>Lee Stout, former president of the Society of American Archivists, recounts the Nixon administration's success in promoting women to executive positions in the federal government. The administration's initiative was led by Barbara Hackman Franklin, staff assistant to President Nixon, who was hired in 1971 to enlist female candidates to fill high-level positions. Mr. Stout reports that during Ms. Franklin's tenure she introduced over one-hundred women to executive jobs in the federal government, close to four times more than any prior administration. Lee Stout spoke on a panel with former Commerce Secretary Barbara Hackman Franklin and former Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley about the challenges they and other women faced then and how their advances shaped opportunities for later generations. The event was moderated by Judy Woodruff at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Magna Carta Restoration and Display</title>
      <description>Archivist David Ferreiro held a press conference to announce the return to public display of a copy of the 1297 version of the Magna Carta after a year of conservation treatments. One of only four known 1297 originals, the document is on permanent loan by its owner David Rubenstein. They unveiled the restored document to the press. Mr. Rubenstein responded to questions about how he came to own a copy of the Magna Carta, the history of the Magna Carta, and how his early work on Capitol Hill as chief counsel to the Senate subcommittee on constitutional amendments influenced his interests.
Video was shown as Kitty Nicholson talked about the conservation process and Jay Brandenburg described the process of encasing the Magna Carta.
Then Marvin Pinkert showed reporters the spot in the rotunda where the document would be displayed and its new interactive exhibit.</description>

      <title>Creation of the Eisenhower National Memorial</title>
      <description>Archivist of the United States David Ferriero moderated a discussion with architect Frank Gehry and his collaborator, theater artist Robert Wilson, on the design of the national memorial to President Eisenhower and their creative process. The Eisenhower National Memorial, planned for a four-acre site at the base of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to open in 2015. The backdrop and centerpiece of the design is a woven-metal tapestry of a Kansas landscape unique in architectural history. They showed photographs during their presentation and responded to questions from members of the audience. Landscape architect Joe Brown also responded to a question.</description>

      <description>Timothy Naftali moderated a discussion among eyewitnesses to the impromptu debate between Vice President Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev on July 24, 1959, at the American National Exhibition in Moscow. Photographs of the event and a video of the meeting of the two world leaders were shown behind the speakers on the Archives stage. Also shown was a video clip of a 2008 oral history interview with William Safire. The panelists were former Ambassador Gilbert Robinson, the exhibition coordinator, and exhibition guides Tatiana Sochurek and George Feifer.       <title>Obama Administration Open Government Policies</title>

According to a National Security Archive study federal agencies have been slow to adopt President Obama's initiative to respond quickly to FOIA requests with 41 of 90 federal agencies have not made changes to their FOIA procedures.</description>

      <title>John F. Kennedy Presidential Library Online Archive Unveiling</title>
      <description>The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library launched its "Access to a Legacy"  Digital Archive Initiative. This online archive contains thousands of documents, photographs, audio recordings, and other materials, making it the largest online archive of U.S. presidential records. A video clip was shown of President Kennedy talking about his library. Other video clips were included in a video shown demonstrating the use of the digital archive. A video about the process of creating the archive was also shown. This event in the Archivist's Reception Room was part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's inauguration.</description>

      <title>Moynihan in the White House</title>
      <description>Prior to his career in the United States Senate, Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1927-2003) worked in four presidential administrations. He served in the Nixon administration from 1969-71 as an adviser on urban affairs. His legacy has received renewed attention following the release of his papers by the National Archives. Four members of Daniel Moynihan's White House staff discussed his relations with President Nixon and their collaborations on welfare reform, education policy, and other issues. The session was moderated by Mr. Weisman, editor of [Daniel Patrick Moynihan: A Portrait in Letters of an American Visionary]. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience.
This event at the American Enterprise Institute was sponsored by the Richard Nixon Foundation and the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. This Nixon Legacy Forum was the tenth in a series of Nixon Legacy events planned throughout 2010 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nixon opening his library in Yorba Linda.</description>

      <title>Jewish Experience During the Civil War</title>
      <description>A panel discussion was held on the experiences of Jewish men and women during the U.S. Civil War. Professor Zola, who was a member of the academic advisory council of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, talked about Jewish perceptions of President Lincoln. Topics included General Ulysses S. Grant's Order 11, which called for the expulsion of all Jews in his military districts. Eli Evans talked about his book [Judah P. Benjamin: The Jewish Confederate]. Pamela Nadell, co-editor of [Women and American Judaism: Historical Perspectives], talked about the involvement of women. The panelists showed some pictures during their presentations and afterward responded to questions from members of the audience. Professor Zola moderated.
Representative Wasserman-Schultz spoke about commemorating Jewish heritage.

      <title>President Nixon's Meeting with Elvis</title>
      <description>In commemoration of the 75th birthday of Elvis Presley on January 8, 2010, the National Archives held a discussion of his White House meeting with then President Richard Nixon on December 21, 1970. Egil "Bud" Krogh, who was assistant to the counsel to the president 1969"1973, and Jerry Schilling, a long-time friend of Elvis Presley, were present in the Oval Office. They gave their eyewitness accounts of the meeting along with on-screen projections of related photographs, memos, and correspondence in the holdings of the National Archives. A video clip of an interview with former President Nixon in 1990 was also shown. They responded to questions from members of the audience. Mr. Naftali moderated.</description>

      <description>Presidential biographers and historians Robert Caro, Bob Clark, and Ted Sorenson discussed their research and writings on former Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. The panel was moderated by James Atlas. They also responded to questions from members of the audience.
Robert Caro is the author of several books including [The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York], which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 and a multi-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson that includes the titles, [The Path to Power], [Means of Ascent], and [Master of the Senate] that was the winner of the National Book Award in 2002 and Pulitzer Prize in 2003. 
Bob Clark is the supervisory archivist at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. 
Ted Sorensen was a speechwriter and special counsel to President John F. Kennedy. Following his time in the Kennedy administration, Mr. Sorensen practiced international law. He is the author of several books, including [Kennedy], [Decision-Making in the White House], and [Counselor: A Life a the Edge of History].
James Atlas is the president of the publisher Atlas &amp; Co. He is the author of several books, including [My Life in the Middle Ages] and [Bellow: A Biography].
This was part of The Conservators Program at the New York Public Library.</description>

      <description>Tom Wolfe presented a lecture titled, "What's Southern Today?"  He argued that Southern Americans have a much more common-sense approach to life than other Americans. He recounted his experiences growing up in Richmond, Virginia and described what he has observed traveling through the Southern states. Mr. Wolfe also talked about the influence the region has had on his writing. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions.
 
 Tom Wolfe's books include [The Right Stuff, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test], and [The Bonfire of the Vanities]. His latest book is [I Am Charlotte Simmons].</description>
