Use of English in the Workplace

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights held a meeting which included presentations on the issue of employers specifying English as the common language of the workplace. Employers argue that it can be necessary in order to ensure a safe workspace free of racial or gender-related issues, to ensure quality and efficiency of work, and for customer relations. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has taken the position that these "English Only" policies frequently violate the law. The presenters responded to questions from the commissioners and staff.
