Drug Testing Standards for Professional Athletes

A hearing was held on two steroids legislations, the Clean Sports Act as well as the Professional Sports Integrity and Accountability Act. Witnesses in two panels discussed measures that would mandate federal drug-testing standards for major professional sports organizations. The first panel of former professional baseball players testified about the players' union opposition to tougher drug testing. The second panel of Commissioners and representatives from major sport players' associations discussed whether existing drug-testing policies of their organizations effectively deterred athletes from using performance-enhancing substances. They opposed a uniform approach for positive drug test penalties, saying the rules needed to be framed individually for each sport.
