Witnesses in two panels discussed measures that would mandate federal drug-testing standards for major professional sports organizations. The first panel of former professional baseball players testified about the players' union opposition to tougher drug testing. The second panel of Commissioners and representatives from major sport players' associations discussed whether existing drug-testing policies of their organizations effectively deterred athletes from using performance-enhancing substances. The legislation would direct the Secretary of Commerce to issue rules requiring professional sports to adopt and enforce steroid drug testing policies.
