He talked about the need for politicians to promote and encourage dialogue between the different faiths, and warned that increasingly religion was being marginalized. Former Prime Ministers Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, and Margaret Thatcher were in attendance.</description>

      <title>Religion and Peace</title>
      <description>Pope Benedict XVI spoke to representatives of several faith communities about religion and its role in advocating peace.
 
 The pope met with 200 representatives of five major religions in the atrium of the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington D.C. on the theme "Peace Our Hope." After his remarks he was presented with symbols of peace by five young people representing the religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism and Judaism. The "Peace Prayer," attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, was sung by a [schola cantorum]. The farewell was delivered by Bishop Sklba and the Jewish guests moved to the Polish Heritage Room where the pope delivered Passover greetings.</description>

      <title>Address by Pope Benedict XVI</title>
      <description>Pope Benedict XVI addressed Roman Catholic bishops from the U.S. in the crypt of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Several Eastern Orthodox dignitaries also attended the address. His remarks focused on the history of religious practice and diversity in America, the secularization of American culture, and standards of morality. Most of his remarks and questions submitted from the bishops focused on recent sexual scandals involving Catholic priests and the impact of the scandals on the church.
 
 His remarks followed and evening vespers service which was not aired. As the pope left the event bishops sang "Happy Birthday" to honor his 81st birthday.</description>

      <title>Arrival Ceremony for the Pope</title>
      <description>President and Mrs. Bush held an official state arrival ceremony for Pope Benedict XVI. In his remarks the pope stressed themes of religious tolerance, human rights, democratic principles, and international diplomacy. 
 
 Over thirteen thousand people who attended the ceremony sang "Happy Birthday" in honor of his 81st birthday. The events included a simultaneous 21-gun salute and the national anthems of the Holy See and the United States played by the Marine Band. Kathleen Battle performed "The Lord's Prayer" and the U.S. Army Chorus performed "Battle Hymn of the Republic."</description>

      <description>Pope Benedict XVI delivered his first blessing to a crowd gathered in Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City. The Pope was previously known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany and served as the dean of the College of Cardinals. His remarks were delivered in Italian and following the blessing people in the square shouted "Viva Il Papa" ("Long Live the Pope").</description>
