Ending the War in Iraq

Etan Thomas and Anthony Arnove talked about the war in Iraq and the politics of the Bush administration. Mr. Thomas, who plays center for the Washington Wizards basketball team, is the author of a book of political poetry titled [More than an Athlete: Poems by Etan Thomas], published by Moore Black Press. During the event he recited two of his poems from the book, one about conservative politics and another about the Bush administration's justification for the invasion of Iraq. Anthony Arnove is the author of [Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal], published by New Press. He argued that the U.S. should withdraw troops from Iraq immediately despite the question of civil war, the character of the Iraqi resistance, and the U.S. goal of establishing democracy. Both authors answered questions from members of the audience following their remarks.

Book Discussion on [Suburban Sweatshops]

Ms. Gordon talked about her book [Suburban Sweatshops: The Fight for Immigrant Rights], published by Harvard University Press. about the large numbers of immigrant workers worked outside of urban centers. The author compares low-wage immigrant work such as housekeeping and yard work to sweatshop labor and argues that conditions are very similar, including the long hours and the high risk of injury. As founder of the Workplace Project, she identified the challenges facing new immigrants and their allies who hoped to organize unions. Following her remarks she answered questions from members of the audience.
