Education Department Oversight

Secretary Spellings testified about the Department of Education's Reading First and the management of student loan programs. The administration and management of several college student loan programs were under investigation for mismanagement, conflicts of interest, and corrupt practices. Facing aggressive questions about her department's oversight of the $85 billion-a-year student loan industry, she noted that she had previously called for a multi-agency effort to prevent corruption in the loan system. One of the biggest areas of contention was the department's oversight of companies that offer private loans and the ability of the federal government to regulate non-federal loan programs.
