      <title>Presidential Candidates Forum</title>
      <description>Senators John McCain and Barack Obama were interviewed separately by Judy Woodruff and Richard Stengel. The candidates greeted each other as they passed on the stage. The interviews focused on the presidential candidates' views on service and civic engagement in the post-September 11, post-Katrina world.
 
 During pauses for commercial breaks in the live program, video clips were shown of events of the day at the dedication ceremony for the Pentagon Memorial and the congressional remembrance ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Also a report was made on the candidates' joint visit to Ground Zero in New York City and a telephone interview with Michelle Nunn about the forum was played.
 
 
 "The ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum" was the opening event of the ServiceNation Summit. It was held in the Roone Arledge Theatre at Columbia University.</description>

      <title>Ethics and Journalism</title>
      <description>As part of an event honoring Clay Felker, the panelists, moderated by Mr. Schell, discussed the ethics of journalism in a fragmenting media culture, and the media's responsibility as "watchdogs" of democracy. Topics included the loss of public trust in the media, journalists' role in regaining public trust, and whether their efforts are working. Other topics included the war in Iraq, patriotism, the effect of the September 11 attacks, plagiarism scandals, freedom of the press, and the advent of Internet journalism.
   
 The event was co-sponsored by [New York Magazine] and Demos as part of the University of California-Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism Felker Magazine Program in honor of Clay Felker. Felker's wife Gail Sheehy read a statement from him.</description>

      <title>Life &amp; Times of Benjamin Franklin</title>
      <description>Three of the most prominent recent biographers of Benjamin Franklin participated in a discussion at the National Constitution Center. Jim Lehrer, who wrote [The Franklin Affair:  A Novel], published by Random House, moderated the panel. Following the discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Richard Beeman, a member of the National Constitution Center Board of Trustees, introduced the program.
 
 The participants were:  Walter Isaacson, author of [Benjamin Franklin:  An American Life], published by Simon and Schuster; Gordon Wood, author of [The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin], published by The Penguin Press; Stacy Schiff, author of [A Great Improvisation:  Franklin, France, and the Birth of America ], published by Henry Holt and Co. 
 
 The program was presented in conjunction with the traveling exhibit "Benjamin Franklin:  In Search of a Better World," organized by the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the oldest Founding Father, born January 17, 1706.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Memoirs]</title>
      <description>Richard Stengel interviewed Ahmed Kathrada about his book [Memoirs], published by Zebra Press. It chronicles his life as a political activist in South Africa. Mr. Kathrada explained that his anti-apartheid activism began at the age of 10 and eventually landed him in jail for 26 years. The author described his close relationship with Nelson Mandela while they were imprisoned together and recounted burying the original draft of President Mandela's autobiography during the time of his imprisonment. Following the discussion, Mr. Kathrada responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
 
 Ahmed Kathrada was an advisor to President Nelson Mandela, and now serves as the chairperson of the Robben Island Museum Council and of the Ex-Political Prisoner's Committee.</description>

 A brief introductory video was shown.

      <title>National Constitution Center</title>
      <description>[Washington Journal] was telecast from Signers' Hall in the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA. Signers' Hall features life-size bronze statues of 42 men: the 39 delegates who signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787, as well as the three who refused.
 
 Richard Stengel talked about the creation of the National Constitution Center and its focus on the U.S. Constitution and responded to telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail from viewers. 
 
 Mr. Smock spoke about the U.S. Constitution and the role that the signers of the document played during the Constitutional Convention. Mr. Smock, a former historian of the U.S. House, was the exhibit's historical consultant. He also talked about the creation of the statues, their historic detail, and the signers themselves. During his remarks he also responded to telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail from viewers.</description>

      <description>Authors Bowden and Griffin were interviewed by Mr. Turzanski about U.S. foreign policy issues in their fiction and nonfiction books, including the current war in Iraq. Mr. Bowden's book [Black Hawk Down] focused on street combat in Somalia and Mr. Griffin's newest novel, [By Order of the President], from Putnam Publishing Group, is about thwarting a terrorism attack in Philadelphia. Mr. Bowden's most recent book is [Road Work: Among Tyrants, Beasts, Heroes, and Rogues], published by [Atlantic Monthly Press]. It is a collection of articles on modern war from his former newspaper, [The Philadelphia Inquirer], and from [The Atlantic Monthly]. They also answered audience members' questions.</description>

      <title>America and the Courts</title>
      <description>At a dinner at the National Constitution Center, the 2004 We The People Award was given to William T. Coleman, Jr. for his lifetime achievement in civic engagement. The award was presented by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia with an introduction by Peter Jennings.
 
 The We The People Award was created in 1996 to honor individuals who best exemplify the qualities of active citizenship envisioned by our nation's Founding Fathers and who have made noteworthy contributions to constitutional principles. 
 
 A graduate of Harvard Law School and senior counselor at the law firm O'Melveny and Myers, William T. Coleman, Jr. was the Secretary of Transportation from 1975 to 1977, in the Ford administration. He was the first African-American selected as a Supreme Court law clerk when he served Justice Felix Frankfurter in the 1948-1949 term. In the 1950s, he worked on a number of landmark civil rights cases while working part-time for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, co-authoring the Supreme Court brief in [Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka]. Mr. Coleman received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton in 1995.</description>

In the book, the author argues that while many people consider Franklin one of the first Americans, he was perhaps the last of the founding fathers to become an American patriot. Mr. Wood describes Franklin's transformation from an admirer of the British Empire to one of the key players in the American Revolution.
