Situation in Afghanistan

Former Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah talked about the security situation in Afghanistan. He briefly outlined recent Afghani history and talked about how Afghani citizens feel about the changes in Afghanistan since the U.S. invasion. He discussed how the choice of a presidential system, where power is concentrated in the center, meant that provincial councils outside of Kabul are not given enough of a role to play in the government, and how this reduces confidence in the government. He said that in the future it was crucial to take into account the grievances of the people in this and other regards. Following his prepared remarks he answered questions from members of the audience.

Book Discussion on [Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military]

Husain Haqqani talked about his book [Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military], published by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The relationship between Pakistan's military and Islamic groups in the country is one that complicates the relationship between the United States and Pakistan. The author examined how Pakistan has been torn between being an Islamic state and hub for radical Islamic activity while also sharing intelligence with the U.S. intelligence community in the global efforts to combat terrorism. The author contended that part of this struggle with identity stems from the long-standing close ties between the Pakistani military and Islamic groups. Ambassador Haqqani discussed these issues with Ambassador Oakley and Steve Coll. Following their presentation, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.

Ambassador Robert B. Oakley is a distinguished fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University and former Ambassador to Pakistan.

Steve Coll is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, [Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001].

Husain Haqqani served as the Pakistani ambassador to Sri Lanka from 1992 to 1993. He was an adviser to several former Pakistani prime ministers.
