Several organizations hosted a "1960's-style speak-in" featuring Professor Chomsky. He spoke briefly and then conducted a question and answer period on international issues including the current Middle East Peace Conference. He believes the peace initiatives are biased toward Israeli and U.S. purposes, rather than overall peace. Professor Chomsky is sometimes called the father of modern linguistics. He is a harsh critic of U.S. foreign policy, which he sees as being concerned only with domination and control.

Failed States Index

Susan Glasser discussed the anatomy and consequences of failed states, or countries that are unable to maintain a stable, sovereign government. Failed states bring consequences from a regional and international viewpoint; resulting in loss of invested capital, loss of human lives, and a devaluation of future governmental regimes in the country. Many countries, after experiencing a failed state revolution, will chronically repeat the process, greatly weakening the region and nation. Viewer questions were taken via telephone and electronic devices.

Situation in Sudan

A panel discussion was held on the continuation of violence in Sudan and violations of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) by the National Congress Party.

The CPA, signed on January 9, 2005, tentatively brought an end to more than two decades of war between the Sudan People's Liberation Army in the south and the forces of the Sudanese government in the north. But since that time, the National Congress Party (formerly known as the National Islamic Front) in Khartoum has failed to honor some of the key provisions of the CPA, and has supported militia-based violence against Southern Sudan and the other marginalized areas such as the Nuba Mountains.

Panelists discussed how to save the peace agreement, what effect the lack of implementation of the CPA has had on civil society, and what the United States government can do to ensure peace. Following the discussion panelists answered questions from members of the audience.

Rethinking National Security

Participants in the 1991 American Assembly convened to determine the final public policy initiatives to be published under the name of the 1991 forum whose topic was "Rethinking America's Security." Assembly members discussed the group's conclusions on the military, technological, and economic security of the United States. The group went over the document to be published containing the group's conclusions, and refined the phrasing of the predetermined public policy initiatives. The American Assembly brings together approximately 60 public policy leaders in Arden House in Harriman, New York, to discuss a current topic in public policy. Through a consensus building process, the group determines specific initiatives and conclusions on public policy which are then published and distributed by the American Assembly following the end of the conference.

Ms. Chittister stressed the discrepancy between the enormous financial outlays needed for the U.S. attack against Iraq and the decreasing financial support for the economically disadvantaged in the U.S.
