Book Discussion on [Triple Cross]

Peter Lance talked about his book [Triple Cross: How Bin Laden's Master Spy Penetrated the CIA, the Green Berets, and the FBI] (Harper Paperbacks; June 16, 2009). He talked about the events leading up to the September 11, 2001, attacks, focusing on failures in acting on intelligence and on Ali Mohamed, an al Qaeda double agent who was able to penetrate the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the U.S. military before being brought to justice in the late 1990s. He argued that before September 11, the war on terrorism was largely a legal war, focusing on prosecutions and freezing assets. Mr. Lance, who criticized the performance of then Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald in his book [Triple Cross: How bin Laden's Master Spy Penetrated the CIA, the Green Berets, and the FBI--and Why Patrick Fitzgerald Failed to Stop Him] (William Morrow; September 5, 2006), also discussed Mr. Fitzgerald's threats to sue Mr. Lance and his publisher HarperCollins over the publishing of the paperback edition of the book. Alexander Vassiliev, a former KGB officer, was given unprecedented access to Stalin-era KBG records that allowed him and his co-authors to present an unprecedented history of Soviet spy activity in America. Amongst several profiles, the authors contend that I.F. Stone had a working relationship with the KGB in the 1930s and that Alger Hiss assisted with Soviet intelligence over several years. Mr. Haynes talked about the discovery of this important source material. Professor Klehr talked about some of the significant findings they made such as who was and who was not actually a Soviet source. They then responded to questions from members of the audience.
This event was held by the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., at noon on Thursday, 20 August, 2009.

Book Discussion on [The Cuckoo's Egg]

Clifford Stoll enthusiastically discussed his discovery and tracking
of a West German computer spy who "broke" into his institution's
computer network to access other networks throughout the U.S. In
[The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer
Espionage], Stoll details the story involving Markus Hess, who sold
the stolen information from U.S. military networks to the Soviet
Union before being caught and eventually indicted.

Stoll's animated personality adds to the discussion of his background
and views on computer crime. Between yo-yo tricks and sharing a
favorite cookie recipe, he tells his experience of giving
congressional testimony and of working with federal agents to track
the spy. Now an expert in computer security, Stoll has spoken to many
government agencies, universities and other organizations on the
subject.

Ms. Priest says that this hidden bureaucracy is too vast and dangerous and needs to be exposed. She discussed her book with former Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith.

According to Harris, the Admiral's push for increased surveillance began with the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon and continued past the World Trade Center attacks. But the resulting increase in surveillance has had no effect on terror attacks, Mr. Harris argues, it simply created a surveillance state against U.S. citizens instead of foreign terrorists.
